Comal County Texas
Date: Monday, May 18th, 2020 to Saturday, October 31st, 2020
With steady growth in this southern area of Comal County, Emergency Services District No. 6 (ESD 6) Commissioners have announced a remodeling project to its Central Fire Station and construction of equipment and apparatus bays at its newest substation. According to ESD 6 Commissioner Herb Coley, “This needed construction will benefit the citizens of our district. Both projects have been well planned over the past few years and so neither creates debt for the district”.
Frank Yannuzzi, the ESD 6 Commissioner who has been leading the project planning emphasized that “We will remain fully operational and there will be no change to the professional and responsive emergency services the public has grown accustomed to during any portion of the construction”. Completion of this work is projected for October 2020.
The central station constructed in 1999, will receive a needed electrical and h-vac upgrade to meet current code, while also rearranging much of its space to better accommodate operations and crew living areas. Bracken Volunteer Fire Chief, Donald Zipp indicated that “Over time, the number of required fire crews and related equipment has grown to meet demand. And the new substation will help improve response time to parts of our service area”
The new substation located at the corner of FM 1863 and Delafield Drive, will help to reduce response time for citizens in the northwestern part of the district. Upon completion, it will be staffed with crews and fire apparatus 24/7.
The Comal County Emergency Services District No. 6 was created by the Comal County Commissioners’ Court after a Public Election in 2003. The District was created to provide emergency services and promote public safety, welfare, health, and convenience of citizens residing in the district. It provides for fire and medical services to over 75-square miles of a combination of Texas hill country rural, wildland, and suburban settings.
ESD 6 contracts for emergency services with Bracken Volunteer fire Department for Fire Services (Fire Prevention & Suppression and Emergency Medical Treatment) and Schertz EMS for Emergency Medical Services (Advanced Life Support Treatment & Transport).
